This recipe is inspired from my 42 Day Nutritarian Challenge that I am currently on. It is currently day 11, and I have been having this lovely little smoothie most mornings to wake me up and give me a quick energy boost.

I have this strong feeling that lemons are a key ingredient to keep my kidneys running well — I’ve read in a few forums and on Dr. Fuhrman’s forum some advice to make lemons a part of your diet when you’re fighting kidney stones. And considering that is a thing I *never* want to have to go through again, I’m pulling out all the stops on preventative measures!

I’m also one of those people who doesn’t drink tea or coffee in the morning. It’s just never been my thing. I mean…put a soy, decaf, toffeenut latte from Starbucks in front of me and I won’t say no…but notice how I said decaf? Yeah, any caffeine after say, oh…9 am…and I’ll be up wayyy past my bedtime. Starbucks is just for yummy sugar in my book, not caffeine.

And since I really like to get up early in the mornings, I wanted to find a recipe that would give me lots of energy for the wee hours of the morning…plus lemon!

For a while, in order to get my lemon in in the mornings, I was making what I called Lemonade Oatmeal. I know it probably sounds weird, but I actually lovvved it! I will still have it from time to time, but I’m not having it lately because it includes a lot of extra sugar. A quick and easy breakfast: instant oatmeal, boiling water, juice of 1/2 lemon, 3 tablespoons coconut sugar.

So I wanted to find a lemon-y replacement…and I had been having hot water with lemon occasionally, which I like, but not on a regular basis….and thus was born the Morning Fire Smoothie!

So I thought, I want to have a whole lemon every day if possible. Pulp and juice. So I set off to work with my trusty Vitamix and got experimenting.

Well I didn’t have to experiment long, because my first attempt was a total success. Voila: the recipe follows…

Use as much or as little ginger as you want, but if you use enough, you'll understand why it's called Morning Fire! :D If you don't have a high-powered blender, it will still be ok, but the sweetness of the dates won't be mixed all in, it will be more like little chunks you have to chew. All good either way!
